  • Title: Rev.
  • Birth: 1724 in NY
  • Death: 1794 in Washington Co. VA
  • Note:

Rev. Thomas Woolsey was in Westchester and Ulster Counties, NY, until abt 1767 when he moved to Virginia. He took up quite a number of acres on both sides of the South Fork of the Holsten River in Washington Co., (now Symthe Co.), VA., and settled near what is known today as Sinclair's Bottoms. They built a stone church there wherehe preached and visited the surrounding areas. I believe a Primitive Baptist Church Rev. Thomas Woolsey came into the Holston River country in Washington Co., VA by 1771. I have been studying a little on the history of the Baptists at that time in that area and have only scratched the surface. Hoping that there may be one or two of you researchers who descend from him, may want to find out more about the Baptists in VA on the Holston & Nolachucky, I give the following. Remember, his son Thomas Jr. was a preacher and several other relatives: "... and the Baptist preachers who, with a zeal worthy of admiration, preached a soul-stirring gospel that was gladly heard by the common people of the hill country.
