This family history of the Sheldrick family has been created using family papers and internet resources. Most of the early dates and names (especially females) are from the International Genealogical Index. Also used were the baptismal index, burial index, the 1841 and 1851 indexes from the Cambridgeshire Family History Society, and the birth, marriage and death records from the Cambridge Records Centre, and Boyd's Index from englishorigins.com. Since internet resources are at best terciary, I have also consulted films of the original records of Whittlesford parish. To substantiate my own patrimony, I have gathered many registrations and certificates, and I am as sure as I believe anyone can be about those members of my family. There may be errors in the more distant relatives, however, especially the remote early branches of the family.

There is a Thomas Sheldrick baptized July 10, 1709 in Stapleford, just north of Whittlesford, son of Richard and Ann. This might be the correct Thomas since that year was given in the family "tree". Further corroboration is found in the naming of his first daughter by Mary Norden, Ann, and there is a Richard as third son. Continguous parishes of Stapleford: Fulbourn, Babraham, Sawston, Gt, Shelford, Cherryhinton.

The marriage shown on FamilySearch.org is to Mary North on Oct. 1, 1735, and subsequent children were to Thomas and Mary. The names coincide with those we have in the family papers, children of Elizabeth and Thomas. Boyd's Index, however, shows the name to be Mary Norden. The registration in the parish record of Whittlesford is difficult to decipher, although I would guess Norden. Family papers show the name to be Elizabeth Morder. The children of Thomas and Mary are after 1735, the marriage date of Thomas and Mary. There are children, however, of an Elizabeth and Thomas Sheldrick in Whittlesford prior to 1835 (and the death of Elizabeth in 1734). It is possible that there were two marriages of the same Thomas which might account for the confusion. Thomas and Elizabeth may have married elsewhere and moved to Whittlesford, or their marriage registration may have been lost.

The dates showing two years are automatic in the FTM program - two calendars were in use at the time during the changeover to the Gregorian. "Sept 2, 1752 Calendar adjustment day in, when the Julian calendar was "corrected" to the Gregorian calendar. By British law, September 2 was declared September 14, removing 11 days from the year. (Other European countries made the adjustment on earlier dates.) "

Whittlesford Burial Register: "1786 Thomas Sheldrick - Labourer June 5th" For some years prior to his death, Thomas seems to have been on the paupers register, and was paid 2s/week. In the register of assessments for the poor, the Sheldricks found were shown as tenants.

Occupation: Labourer (Source: Church of England, Whittlesford Parish Register, (unpaginated).)
