Thomas Roper’s origins have yet to be established with certainty, although it seems reasonably likely that he was the Thomas Roper baptised at Birdham in Sussex on 29th August 1710. His first confirmed sighting is on 23rd November 1733, when he married Ann Spring at Chichester Cathedral. At the time of their marriage he was living in Donnington, and she was living in neighbouring Birdham, both a little way south-west of Chichester. Thomas was described as a husbandman. Thomas and Ann initially lived in Donnington after their marriage, having a son (also called Thomas) baptised there in 1734. They then moved to the neighbouring parish of Sidlesham, where they had another five children baptised between 1735 and 1743. Ann died in 1759. She was buried at Sidlesham on 8th August 1759, described as Mrs Ann Roper from Mundham, indicating that the family had moved to the neighbouring parish of North Mundham, whilst the “Mrs” implies that the family had a slightly higher status than the ordinary labourers by that time. After Ann’s death, Thomas returned to Sidlesham. Just under a year after Ann’s death, Thomas married again. His second wife was a widow called Hannah Pain and they married at Sidlesham on 18th July 1760. Thomas was described as a yeoman at this time, and he was said to be 49 years old. Thomas died in 1769, being buried at Sidlesham on 11th January 1769. He was about 58 years old. Hannah survived him by eleven years. References
