  2. ...according to the History of Saratoga County New York: "The first clearing on the south side of the river, near Conkingville, was done by Thomas Rolph in 1828. He worked about one-half day and then crossed the river in a canoe. In returning, the canoe was upset and he was drowned. The body was recovered some time after and was buried on the river bank, near the present sawmill."
