The Thomas J Ray who married Mary Harvey[3] is tentatively identified as the same person as the Thomas Ray who married Emelia/Emeline and fathered George, Daniel, Sarah, John and Elizabeth Ray[5], in spite of the fact that the middle initial of the latter was given as F in the 1850 census. The evidence is:

  • There is definitely continuity between the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records cited here - they must be the same family.
  • Two of the children in the 1850 census (Sarah and Elizabeth) appear in the 1860 census with similar birth years.
  • The 1850 and 1860 census records are in the same town.
  • Thomas's age and birth place (Kentucky) are consistent throughout the census records (from 1850 to 1880).
  • There is a gap in ages of the children in the 1860 census, suggesting a second marriage.
  • Mary's 1900 census record implies she was married about 1850, consistent with her being Thomas's second wife.
