Grandma (Lelia Harris White) gave me a gold nugget on a necklace and a medicine bottle with gold flakes and small nuggets. She said she’d had a choice of 2 nuggets and she picked the smaller one to be polite but had regretted it since. She told me the nuggets were given her by Charlie Hopper, that she knew him as “Uncle Charley.” I suspect it was really Charlie Peterson since Charlie Hopper died in 1880 and Grandma was born in 1893! Also Charley Peterson was living with her father’s family in the 1910 census.
