Thomas Martin was baptised on 9th April 1786 at South Bersted in Sussex, son of Thomas Martin and his wife Ann. Thomas would later give his place of birth as Bognor, which at the time was a small fishing village in the parish of South Bersted, although during Thomas’s childhood Sir Richard Hotham was beginning to develop the village into a new seaside resort.

On 26th December 1808, aged 22, Thomas married Sarah Hammond, who was also from South Bersted, which is where they married, although Thomas had by then moved to the neighbouring parish of Felpham.

Thomas and Sarah settled in Felpham after their marriage, having ten children baptised there between 1809 and 1832. Thomas worked as a fisherman.

In the summer of 1835, one of Thomas’s sons (another Thomas) died at the age of seventeen, followed a few weeks later by Thomas’s wife Sarah, who was 45. Another son, Henry, died in 1837 aged 21.

Each census from 1841 to 1871 finds Thomas living in Felpham and working as a fisherman. In 1841 he had his two youngest daughters living with him, and in 1861 he had his youngest daughter living with him. His youngest daughter in 1851 had been living with Thomas’s late wife’s sister in Littlehampton. In both 1851 and 1871 Thomas appears to have been living alone.

Thomas’s eldest son, George, died in 1876, aged 64.

Thomas lived to be 91 years old. Some time between 1871 and 1878 he left Felpham and moved to Brighton, presumably to be near family. He died in Brighton in 1878, and was buried back at Felpham on 21st January 1878. He had been a widower for 42 years.
