Thomas Lothrop
Aged 37 Years
Who Died March 4th
1740.
[Note: many sources apply this death date to a different Thomas Lothrop. The other Thomas Lothrop had a daughter in Boston in late 1740, and according to Source:Banks, Charles Edward. History of Martha's Vineyard, Dukes County, Massachusetts, at some unspecified point in life, returned to Martha's Vineyard, settling in Chilmark where he died. If Banks is correct, this could not be his death date.
An article covering this Thomas, in TAG, Vol. 41, p. 196, does not mention this date. However, this article does show that Thomas Lothrop died before 2 May 1741 because Deborah was called a single woman in a deed of that date. The similarity of the death date on the tombstone with the qualitative estimate suggests it is probably his. Deborah was given administration of the estate of Thomas Lothrop mariner on 12 Oct 1743 [citing Suffolk Probate 7974]. Further, Boston Selectman reports, dated 1 Dec 1740, mention Capt. Thomas Lothrop, captainn of the Ship King George, having cases of small-pox on board, agreeing with the occupation, suggesting the cause of death, and clarifying double-dating.]
