TO BE UPDATED

1821 was witness to marriage of John Flint and Hannah Strip - it's not known how they were related. 1828 witness to marriage of John Young and Maria Wood - it's not known how they were related.

Thomas Longley was born about 1788 in Edenbridge, Kent, England. He married Sarah (surname unknown) before 1807 when their first known child, Sarah, was baptised in Edenbridge. The following children were also baptised in Edenbridge: Thomas bap. 1809, James bap. 1811, Hannah bap. 1813, Mary Ann bap. 1815, and Elizabeth bap. 1817.

By December 1819 the family had moved to the nearby Lingfield parish, where more of Thomas and Sarah's children were baptised: George in 1819, Ellen in 1822, Joseph in 1824, and William in 1827. A last daughter, Emma, was born in Lingfield around 1831 but her baptism record hasn't been found yet.

On the Lingfield baptism records Thomas's occupation is given as "schoolmaster". A report into charities in the county of SurreyS8 mentions a school house owned by the Lingfield parish, leased by the churchwardens, with the rent of 2l. 10s. going to Thomas. "This sum is received by Thomas Longley, a schoolmaster, who in respect of it, instructs in reading, writing and arithmetic, four poor children of the parish, who are appointed by the minister and churchwardens; he also received 5l. out of the money collected as alms at the celebration of the sacrament, and educates eight more poor children on that account."

The first of Thomas and Sarah's children to marry was Elizabeth, who at the age of 21 was wed to labourer (and later miller) George Gorringe, at the parish church in Horne, Surrey. Although Elizabeth's marriage record states Thomas Longley was a shoemaker, we can be fairly confident that Elizabeth was Thomas' daughter because in the 1841 census Elizabeth, her husband George, and infant son were living with Thomas, Sarah, and several of the other Longley children at a house near the church in Horne. Thomas and Sarah's sons Joseph and William were working as shoemakers so perhaps Thomas supplemented his schoolmaster's income with work as a shoemaker. Sarah is listed as a schoolmistress on the 1841 census so she may have helped in the school as a teacher.

Thomas and Sarah stayed in Horne for the rest of their lives, most likely in the same house, variously described as "House near Church" and the "Old Workhouse". Thomas continued to work as schoolmaster and Parish Clerk for the rest of his life.

Three of Thomas and Sarah's children (Thomas, James, and Hannah) are unaccounted for except for their baptism records. It may be that they died young, or they just haven't yet been identified in census and marriage records etc. In 1848 Thomas and Sarah's youngest son William died of consumption aged just 21 and was buried at St. Mary the Virgin's Church Cemetery in Horne. Thomas and Sarah's eldest daughter Sarah never married and lived with them her whole life, passing away just a few years after Thomas.

Thomas and Sarah's other children married and provided Thomas and Sarah with many grandchildren:

  • Mary Ann married greengrocer Stephen Warner in 1841, they had two sons and lived in Worth and Southwark.
  • George remained in Horne for the rest of his life, working as a boot and shoemaker and later farmer. He married Sophia King in Croydon in 1844 and had six children.
  • In 1847 Joseph married Elizabeth Wallis. They had thirteen children, who Joseph supported by working as a boot and shoemaker. While Thomas was still alive they lived in Horne, but later moved to Burstow and Outwood.
  • The Wallis and Longley families must have been close because in 1854 Elizabeth Wallis' brother John Belton Wallis was married to Ellen Longley in Croydon. At the time of their marriage John Wallis worked as a bricklayer but by 1871 Ellen and John were living at and running the "Jolly Farmer" pub in Horne.

Thomas's wife Sarah died from consumption in 1853 aged about 65, and was buried with their son William in Horne. Thomas lived to the age of 84, dying on 1 April 1872 from apoplexy and chronic bronchitis. He was buried with his wife and son in Horne. His will was proved at London on 15 April 1872 by his son Joseph, one of the executors. The will leaves his estate to his lawful children, but does not name them.

NB do not confuse with Thomas Longley, a farm labourer of Lingfield who died at the East Grinstead Union Workhouse in 1883.
