Thomas Llewellyn, Jr. (b.1771- 1861) m. Elizabeth Powers

Thomas Llewellyn, Jr. was born 1771 in Virginia. When he and his father, Thomas Llewellyn, showed up in Rockingham County, NC in 1792, Thomas was approaching 21 years of age. On December 12, 1795, Thomas Lewellen Sr. sells to Thomas Lewellin Jr. some land on Shepherds Creek for 30 pounds of Virginia money. (Deed Book E, p.259) From 1800 to 1825, Thomas Lewellen (most likely Jr.) continues to buy small parcels of land on Shepherd’s Creek and 217 acres on the Dan River.

By 1800 Thomas, Jr. had married Elizabeth Powers and had three of his eventual 13 children. His wife died sometime after 1830. Thomas married again to Ruth Vernon on 3 Sep 1848.

According to a distant cousin, Annie Llewellyn McKenzie, daughter of Manly Llewellyn of Concord NC, the tradition had been passed down that Thomas Llewellyn had red hair and a violent temper.

In 1836 Thomas Llewellyn conveyed to his son Samuel the 217 acres on the Dan River that he had purchased in 1825. (Deed Book Z, page 95)

Thomas wrote a will dated 18 June 1858; it was probated May 1861. In his will he devised to his wife one bed and bed clothing and one year’s provisions. The whole of his estate, both real and personal, was to be sold and the proceeds to be divided equally among his wife and his children except son Samuel, who had already received his share.

It is not until the estate is finally resolved that we learn the names of the children. From a document in the NC State Archives in the loose estate records, dated 1872 we have the following children: Thomas, Susan, Samuel, Elizabeth, James H., Martha (Patsy), John, Richard, Peter, Robert, David, Nancy, and Sally.

Samuel, James H. and John Llewellyn continued to live in Rockingham County. Susan married Thomas Overton, Elizabeth married Nathaniel Vernon and moved to Tazewell Co,, VA, Martha married James Brooks and moved to Jefferson Co, Indiana, Richard moved to Marion, Indiana, Peter moved to Sullivan Co., Indiana, Nancy married Joseph Vernon, and Sally married Noah Vernon.

Annie Llewellyn Samuel reports that Thomas and both his wives were buried on the northwest side of the Mayo River.
