    Thomas and Betsy migrated to the newly opening country of the Gauley River of Kanawha Valley and Betsey's father, David Nutter, followed for Betsey's mother died after the birth of her ninth child. Betsey looked after her siblings for her father. It is said that Thomas and his father, Thomas, and his brothers were involved in land speculation at Peters Creek. Ambrose lived on Peter's Creek and it became known as "Legg's Branch". Thomas lived on Panther Mountain where he built his cabin and farmed. Sometime later he went on a note to help a neighbor, and when it came time to pay it off, neither could and Thomas lost his farm and moved to Fayette, where he farmed and raised his family. He stayed the rest of his life there and is buried with his wife, Betsey.
