Thomas Jones' origins have yet to be established. In the 1851 census he indicated that he had been born around 1777 at Geddington in Northamptonshire. There appear to have been at least two boys called Thomas Jones baptised at Geddington in the late 1770s, and insufficient evidence has been found to say which, if either, is him.

Thomas's first confirmed sighting is on 8th July 1805, when he was married at Barnack to Elizabeth Newborn. At the time of their marriage he was living in the nearby village of Helpston. After their marriage they lived in Helpston for a while, having two children baptised there in 1806 and 1807.

Some time between 1807 and 1813 the family left Helpston and moved to another nearby village, Glinton. They went on to have another four children baptised at Glinton between 1813 and 1823. Thomas was described as a blacksmith on all the baptism records for his children baptised at Glinton.

The 1841 census finds Thomas and Elizabeth living in Glinton, along with a young girl called Rosetta Jones, who may have been a granddaughter. The 1851 census finds Thomas and Elizabeth again in Glinton, with Thomas still working as a blacksmith into his seventies.

Thomas died at Glinton on 28th February 1861. He was about 83 years old. Elizabeth died the following year.
