Thomas Howard's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 21st February 1743 when he married Mary Chapman in London. At the time of their marriage he was described as a bachelor of the parish of St Albans in Hertfordshire, whilst Mary was living at Aston, also in Hertfordshire. She had been orphaned at the age of six and had been brought up by a guardian named Thomas Smith, a butcher. In August 1744 Mary was named in a deed relating to land that she and her two sisters appear to have inherited from their father. That deed describes Thomas as a butcher of St Albans. In 1745 Thomas and Mary had a son, also Thomas, baptised at the Abbey Church in St Albans. None of them have been traced after young Thomas's baptism. |
