“Orange County Probate A - 1816-1826. 1 - LA (letters of administration) to Joel Charles on the estate of Robert Brown, 6 May 1816. Appraisers Jesse Hollowel, Zachariah Hopper and John Pinnick. Said Brown owed money to Jonathan Grifford. Buyers at the sale were: William Arvin (or Irvin), Thomas Atkinson, Sarah Brown (who bought several items), Samuel Caleb, Joel Charles, William Crawford, Jas. Dixon, William Evans, William Farris, Jan. and Jonathan Gifford, Thomas Guelly, Ezekial Henderson, Christopher & Charles Hill, Robert Holladaya, Jas. Hollowel, Thomas, Jasper & Zachariah Hopper, Evan Jones, Thomas Lindley, Steven McCracken, William McDaniel, Wiley Mullins, John Pinnick, William Trueblood and Joseph Willard.

“The town of Paoli (IN) purchased part of the land for the county seat from Jonathan Lindley for $800 and part from Thomas Hopper for $500. Mrs. Rebecca Hopper, who probably opposed selling the land, is said to have submitted gracefully to the signing of the deed after she was paid $5.”

“William Chiles’ History of Lafayette County Missouri fixes the first settlement of Clay Township in said Township and County in the latter part of the year 1819...and at or near the same time Thomas Hopper and family with two sons-in-law; Killen and John Young from Indiana...”
