Thomas Meadows Haines was baptised on 1st August 1830 at Buckland in Gloucestershire, son of a butcher named Thomas Haines, and his second wife, Sarah Jones. The family lived in the hamlet of Laverton.

Young Thomas's mother has yet to be traced after his baptism. Thomas's father died when he was only seven years old. The 1841 census finds Thomas living with his elder half-brother John and his family in Laverton. Thomas has yet to be traced after 1841.
