The Rt. Rev. Thomas Augustus Fraser, Jr., became Bishop Coadjutor of the diocese of North Carolina and hence a Sewanee trustee in 1960 and diocesan bishop in 1965. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was educated in public schools of Brooklyn, New York and is a graduate of Hobart College. His B.D. degree is from Virginia Theological Seminary, 1941. He served as rector of St. Paul's Church, Alexandria, Virginia and St. Paul's Church, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He has been on executive councils of the dioceses of Long Island, Virginia, and North Carolina; on the board of trustees of Virginia Seminary; and on diocesan departments of missions, promotion and Christian education. He is married to the former Marjorie Louise Rimbach and they have a son and a daughter.

The Rt. Rev. Thomas Augustus Fraser, Jr., H'60, retired bishop of North Carolina; on October 20, 1989. Ordained to the priesthood 1942, Fraser spent thirty-one years of his ministry in the Diocese of North Carolina, here he had served as bishop since 1960. Fraser was an activist bishop who presided over the diocese during the spirited times of the 1960s and early '70s. During his episcopacy, the diocese instituted its Christian Social Ministries program, and women gained the right to serve on vestries and as convention delegates. After retiring in 1983, Fraser worked as a part-time chaplain at Duke University Medical Center and did pastoral work at St. Michael's, Raleigh. A 1938 graduate of Hobart College, Geneva, New York, he had spent 1937 as a special student at the University of Jena in Germany. He earned his B.D. degree from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1941. He is survived by his widow, Marjorie Rimbach Fraser, of Raleigh; a son, the Rev. Thomas A. Fraser III; a daughter, Constance F. Gray; and two granddaughters.
