Thomas Downes' origins have yet to be established. If the age quoted when he died was correct, then he was born around 1788.

Thomas's first confirmed sighting is on 12th April 1810, when he married Rose Newborn at Barnack in Northamptonshire. They went on to have five children (including one pair of twins) baptised at Barnack between 1810 and 1823. Thomas was described as a labourer and a shepherd on his children's baptism records.

Thomas died in 1828, being buried at Barnack on 17th August 1828. He was said to be forty years old, and he and Rose had been married for eighteen years. Rose survived him by 33 years, and remarried in 1835.
