In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Coghill of the County of Essex & parish of saint Ann being in possession of a sound disposing mind do make & ordain this to be my last Will & Testament.
First I surrender my Soul into the hands of almighty God trusting in the mercies of Jesus Christ for its redemption ~ & as to what worldly goods it hath pleased God to bless me with I give & dispose of them in the following manner
Imprimis first it is my will that every Just debt of mine be paid.
Item the land whereon I now live & which was given me by my Father Thomas Coghill as also the land I purchased of William Ayres I lend to my loving wife Sarah Coghill During her natural life.
Item I also land unto my said loving wife Sarah Coghill during her natural life thre[e] Nagroes by Name Natt, James the elder & Nan.
Item I also lend unto my said loving wife Sarah during her natural life two feather beds & furniture, the one half in my kitchen & dairy furniture, half dozen Chairs, one large & one small table, the Still, a good Horse & mare sufficiently good for the plantation business also four Cows and Calves, one yoke of Steers & cart, Ten head of hogs also the light Casks & mobby hogs heads with as many of my plantation tools as may be sufficient for the use of the Negroes I have in my Second lent her.
Item I give & bequeath unto my Son John Coghill & his heirs forever Two hundred Acres of my Kentucky land to be laid off i quantity & quality also two negroes of which is now in his possession by names Isaac & Beck.
Item I give bequeath unto my Son Thomas Coghill & his heirs forever the land that was formerly my uncle Frederick Coghills & which was given my by my Father Thomas Coghill as also all the land that shall be Indeeded in a line to be begun at the line of Thomas Cooper Dickinson & running to a branch known by the name of peadidididle & up the branch to the line of John Hord being a part of the land I purshased of Robert Beverley Junior. I also give unto my said [son] Thomas Coghill & his heirs forever two Hundred acres of my land in Kentucky to be laid of in quantity & quality. I also give & bequeath unto my said son Thomas Coghill one Negroe by name Frederick, now in his possession.
Item I give & bequeath unto my son Ewel Coghill and his heirs forever the land I lately purchased of Charles Carter Esqr. & which has not yet been secured by deed of bargain & sale always providing & reserving to the use of my wife during her life, as much as rail timber & firewood from of the said tract of land as the plantation lent her during her life may require. I also give unto my said Son Ewel Coghill & his heirs forever the land I purchased of William Murrah & adjoining the aforesaid land purchased of Mr. Carter. I also give unto my said Son Ewel Coghill & his heirs forever, Two hundred acres of my land in Kentucky to be laid off in quantity quality. I also give my said Son Ewel Coghill my Sorrel blazed faced mare Colt.
Item I give & bequeath unto my son William Coghill & his heirs forever the land whereon I now live & which I have already lent my Wife during her life & his title is not to commence till the death of his mama, agreeable to my first devise in her favor & when that event happens, I also give him the Still with the land I also give & bequeath unto my said son William Coghill & his heirs forever Two hundred Acres of my Kentucky land to be laid off in quantity & quality. I also bive unto my said Son William Coghill one Grey mare Colt at the death of my wife whatever light casks & Mobby hogs heads may be then left I give to aforesaid son William Coghill.
Item I give & bequeath unto my Son Smallwood Coghill and his heirs ~ forever the remainder of my land purchased of Robert Beverley Junr. to be bounded by the division line already described for the bounds of the land heretofore given his Brother Thomas Coghill as also the remainder of my land below that line that was formerly my Brother Frederick Coghills & given me by my Father Thomas Coghill & adjoins the land purchased by Robert Beverley Junior the land of Major Thomas Lomax the land of Margaret Garnett, the land of Joshua Tinsley & the land I have already given to his brother Thomas Coghill. I also give & bequeath unto my said Son Smallwood Coghill & his heirs forever Two hundred acres of my land in Kentucky to be laid off in quantity and quality. I also give unto my said Son Smallwood Coghill whenever he comes to the age of Eighteen years the sum of twenty pounds to be raised out of my Estate or a Horse or mare of that value.
Item I give & bequeath unto my Daughter Elizabeth Miller one Negroe boy by name Abraham.
Item the remainder of my Negroes not already given away & the remainder of my Personal Estate not already devised I give & bequeath to be equally divided between my Children hereafter mentioned, Viz. Ewel Coghill, William Coghill, Smallwood Coghill, Martha Coghill, Sally Atwell Coghill, Aggy Coghill & Nancy Coghill.
Item the Negroes & personal estate lent my Wife during life at her death I give & bequeath to be equally divided among my children, hereafter mentioned Viz. Ewel COghill, William Coghill, Smallwood Coghill, Martha Coghill, Sally Atwell Coghill, Aggy Coghill & Nancy Coghill.
Item it is my will that if either of my daughters Martha Coghill or Sally Atwell Coghill should die before their Marriage that the survivor should have the others part of the estate I have devised them.
Item it is my will that if either of my daughters Aggy Coghill or Nancy Coghill should die before their marriage that the survivor shall have the others part of the estate devised them.
Item it is my will that if either of my Sons Thomas, Ewel, William & Smallwood Coghill should die the other th[r]ee surviving brothers shall have enjoy the estate so devised the dying brother equally among them & so on in case of the death of a second of my sons last mentioned.
Item a remainder being devised by my Father in my favor when the event of my sister Aggathy Carters having no child & should that ever happen to be the case my will & desire is that that reversion should be equally divided between my sons John Coghill & Smallwood Coghill & lastly I appoint my loving Wife Sarah Coghill Exrtx. & my two Sons John Coghill & Thomas Coghill Exors. of this my last will & testament, in Witness whereof I have set my hand & seal this 25th day of February 1786.

At a Court held for Essex County at Tappd. on the 17th day of April 1786. This last Will and Testament of Thomas Coghill dec'd was offered to proof and was proved by Joshua Donohoe and James Donohoe two of the Witnesses thereto and Ordered to be recorded.
