Thomas Cain was baptised on 27th June 1802 at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, son of Sarah Cain formerly Archer and her husband John Cain.

On 19th March 1825, aged 22, Thomas married Hannah Hill at St Paul's Walden. They went on to have eight children at St Paul's Walden between 1825 and 1842, being seven girls and then a boy. All the children's baptisms give the family's abode as Whitwell, the main village in the parish of St Paul's Walden, and record that Thomas was a labourer.

Thomas's father died in 1832.

The 1841 census finds Thomas, Hannah and their children living at Whitwell. Thomas's elderly mother was living in the same house with them. Thomas's mother died in 1844.

The 1851 census finds Thomas, Hannah their children and a grandchild in Whitwell. Thomas was described as an agricultural labourer.

In 1861, Hannah was working as a nurse in the household of a miller in Whitwell. Thomas was away from Whitwell at the time. He was lodging with his daughter Elizabeth and her family in Barnet, a few miles to the south.

By 1871 the family was reunited in Whitwell, with Thomas, Hannah, two daughters and four grandchildren living together.

Thomas died in Whitwell on 23rd July 1875, aged 73. Hannah survived him by nearly fourteen years.
