Hannah Hill was baptised on 15th February 1807 at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, daughter of Moses and Mary Hill.

On 19th March 1825, aged 18, she married Thomas Cain at St Paul's Walden. They went on to have eight children at St Paul's Walden between 1825 and 1842, being seven girls and then a boy. All the children's baptisms give the family's abode as Whitwell, the main village in the parish of St Paul's Walden, and record that Thomas was a labourer.

The 1841 census finds Hannah, Thomas and their children living at Whitwell. Thomas's elderly mother was living in the same house with them.

The 1851 census finds Hannah, Thomas, their children and a grandchild in Whitwell.

In 1861, Hannah was working as a nurse in the household of a miller in Whitwell. Thomas was away from Whitwell at the time. He was lodging with his daughter Elizabeth and her family in Barnet, a few miles to the south.

By 1871 the family was reunited in Whitwell, with Hannah, Thomas, two daughters and four grandchildren living together.

Thomas died in 1875, aged 73. After his death Hannah continued to live with her daughters and grandchildren, appearing with them in the 1881 census, when she was also described as a charwoman.

Hannah died in 1887, aged 80. She was buried at St Paul's Walden on 19th February 1887.
