"Thomas2 Adkins was probably born as early as 1650. … The will of Thomas Adkins was made 23 Oct. 1694, the day of his death [Manwaring's Digest, 1:394]. The inventory taken 13 Dec. 1694 names the children as Mary, aged 22; Thomas, 21; William, 19; Jane, 16; Josiah, 9; Sarah, 12; and Benoni, 4. The will does not mention the wife's name, but says of her: 'my wife shall live in my house as long as she is a widow if she please, & improve my Estate, with my son Thomas, for the Good of the Family. Also my Will is that what Estate my wife brought with her shall return to her again.' This makes It clear that she was a second wife and not the mother of the children. This is also indicated by his giving his little boy Benoni [then only 4] to 'my brother Gabriel' [i.e., Gabriel Williams] to bring up, instead of leaving him with his wife. He named each of the children in the will, and made his wife and son Thomas Executors. Dower was set to the widow, and then she was released and Thomas Adkin was appointed Administrator."
