According to the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, Thelma attended San Benito (Texas?) High School, and later graduated from the Texas Women's University, School of Business, at Denton. She taught school in Santa Rosa, Texas and then taught for nine years in the Raymondville IndependantSchool District. She met John Henry DeWitt while teaching her first year at Santa Rosa, Texas, soon after graduating from college. Thelma's business degree became a big asset to her husband's business ventures. She kept books and tax records, as well as performing the secretarial work that was required. Thelma was named Regional Conservation Homemaker of the Year in 1967. This award was sponsored by the Ft. Worth Press, in cooperation with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and other groups of specialists involved with conservation and home economics. She was honored at a dinner in Pleasanton, and presented with a silver tray. References
