Tako Ebel Ubben, age 83, of Aplington died May 25, 2008, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes. Funeral services were held May 28 at the First Reformed Church in Aplington, with Pastor Harlan DeJong officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Austinville, with Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be left to the family. Condolences may be left at www.redmanschwartz.com. Tako was born the son of Tako and Reka (Miller) Ubben on August 21, 1924, in Butler County, near Dumont. He received his education and graduated from the Ackley High School in 1941. On June 3, 1949, Tako was united in marriage with Grayce M. Kuperus at the Christian Reformed Church, Austinville. They made their home in Austinville. Tako was a butter maker at the Austinville Creamery. He worked for the Waterloo Courier as a circulation representative between 1964 and 1984. In 1967 they moved to Aplington where he also had an Insurance Agency. Tako was on the board of directors of the Butler County Mutual Insurance Agency for 25 years and the Aplington School Board from 1971 to 1977. Tako was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington, where he served on the Consistory and also serving prior years while he was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Austinville. Music was an important part of his life. He entertained many residents singing at the nursing homes, was honored by singing at many funerals and sang with the men’s group, the Kings Men. Tako had great fun for many years playing with Austinville’s fast pitch softball team. He will be remembered for the light-hearted jokes he loved to share with everyone. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, feeding and watching birds, and fishing. His pride and joy was his wife, Grayce, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he loved immensely. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Susie Harms; and ten brothers, Claus, Henry, Heiko, John, Harry, Fred, Theodore, Harm, Elmer and Louie. Takow is survived by his wife, Grace Ubben of Aplington; five children, Tod (Colette) Ubben of Aplington, Jocelyn (Rus) Druvenga of Dike, David (Lynn) Ubben of Winfield, Randy (Lisa) Ubben of Aplington, and Timothy (Deanne) Ubben of Aplington; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Emma Harken of Ackley.
