    Dr. Sylvester VanWinkle, is the first doctor mentioned in the early history of the town of Bristow. He was born Jan. 1832, a native of Crawford County, and was the son of Joseph and Mary (Atherton) VanWinkle. He was one of eleven children. He first married, Mary Ann Johnson, and then, Sarah Allen. As a young man he made his home with a relative, Margaret Harding, in Tobin Township. For the last 25 years of his life, he resided near Gatchel. When he died Oct. 1912, he was listed as the oldest doctor in this county. He was 80 years old.
