Merritt Dear sir or friend having a leasure moment Ithought I would drope you a few lines to inform you that I am well atthis time and truly hopeing these few lines will find you & family allwell & doing well Harvey I aint got any news to rite worth your attention weare a doing very at this time we don't have any thing to do but drilltwice a day we have got very good little huts with chimb to them we canhave good fires we git plenty to eat such as it is we have bread &meat for dinner & meat & bread for supper we half to go out on picketevery 15 days our men & the yankees talks to each other across the river& we exchange news papers with the yankees & soap tobacco for coffee& whiskey we are all giten very friendly if it only will hold out so But Iam afraid that we all will fall out one of these days & kick up afus we had orders to cook up 3 days rashions we thought that theyankees was coming But I belive the order is countermanded & I hope theywill stay So Harvey I heard that you had an increas in your family I wouldlike to know the name if it is a boy I want you to name it for me if youI know he will be a rouser when he git growing Harvey I want you tosend me a big sweet potato by W. C. Graham when he come back Harvey Iwould like to git home more to see you all I think I could enjoy my selfmuch better than I am adoing hear I am in hopes that the war will soon cometo an end so we all can git home once more to live in peace thebalance of our days let them be long or short A soldier life is a hard life tolive it is a very disagreeable life it will wear any man out But I am inhope that we will come out victoriesly in the end I still live inhopes if I should die in dispair Harvey I belive that I have wrote all thatI can think of at this time all the Fort Mill Boys is well & sends youthe best respect & wants you to rite to them Harvey I want you to rite tome as soon as you git this letter as I want to hear from
