Susannah appears to have been married before to an Unknown Latham, because the 1783 tax list for Culpeper County lists her as the head of a household with two younger male Latham children, Robert and Thomas, age 16. It also showed that she owned 12 slaves, an indication she probably inherited well from her previous Latham husband. (Given that John Lear was a tenant farmer most of his life, it is unlikely he ever owned slaves.)
