Susannah Southwell was born in 1866 at Padiham in Lancashire. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Southwell, formerly Hardacre, and her husband William Southwell, who worked in the cotton industry. The 1871 census finds Susannah living with her parents and siblings at Hall Hill in Padiham. By 1881 they had moved to 9 Bright Street, and Susannah was working as a cotton creeler.

In 1888, aged 22, Susannah married Frederick Wright, who seems to have been known as Fred. He was originally from Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, over 180 miles to the south-east, but had recently moved north. They went on to have twelve children together between 1888 and 1908, although their third child died when only one year old.

The 1891 census finds the family living at 9 Back Manchester Road in Hapton, a village just south of Padiham. By 1901 they were living at Stone Moor in Padiham, and in 1911 they were at 97 Hapton Road in Padiham. Fred worked in a chemical works.

Some time between 1911 and 1938 Susannah and Fred left Padiham and moved to Wythenshawe in Manchester, where a large housing estate was being built by Manchester Corporation. They lived there at 16 Wynyard Road.

Susannah died in Manchester in 1938, but was buried back at Padiham on 5th July 1938. She was 72 years old. Fred survived her by just under three years.

    Presumably one of:
    b. Susannah SOUTHWELL, June Quarter 1866, Burnley Registration District, Volume 8e, page 217, mother's maiden name Hardacre
    b. Susannah SOUTHWELL, September Quarter 1867, Burnley Registration District, Volume 8e, page 213, mother's maiden name Hardacre

There were clearly two Susannah Southwells born in Padiham around the same time, both of whom had a mother whose maiden name was Hardacre. Both appear in the 1871 census living at Hall Hill in Padiham with their parents - one was daughter of Silas Southwell and Sarah Hardacre, the other was daughter of William Southwell and Elizabeth Hardacre. Both were said to be four years old in that census. The daughter of Silas and Sarah died unmarried on 13th February 1942, and newspaper notices were placed trying to trace her next of kin, making explicit that she was the daughter of Silas and Sarah (Burnley Express, 12th December 1942). Presumably therefore it must have been the other Susannah, the daughter of William and Elizabeth, who married Frederick Winch.

It is also worth noting that the Susannah who died unmarried in 1942 appears in the 1939 Register in Padiham , giving her date of birth as 17th July 1868. Whilst the year is clearly wrong, it is more likely that the day and month are correct. That being the case, it is considered more likely that her birth would be the one registered in the July to September quarter of 1867, and not the one whose birth was registered between April and June 1866. We therefore conclude that the Susannah who was daughter of William and Elizabeth was the one born in 1866.
