Susannah Palmer’s origins have yet to be established. It is quite possible that she was the Susannah baptised on 18th October 1730 at Cottingham in Northamptonshire.
Susannah had two illegitimate children at Cottingham in the 1760s. She had a girl called Elizabeth in 1761, who died when she was just under two years old in 1763.
Susannah then had a son called John Swan Palmer at Cottingham in 1764. His middle name may be a clue to his father’s identity, although there do not appear to have been any people called Swan living in Cottingham at the time.
Susannah has yet to be traced after John’s baptism. One possibility is that she was the Susannah Palmer who married Francis Messam at Cottingham in 1767. If so, she and Francis have yet to be traced after their marriage.

It seems reasonably likely that the Susannah who was the mother of Elizabeth and John in the 1760s in Cottingham was this Susannah baptised there in 1730.
