Stewart Gatewood Lamar was born in Hawesville, KY on October 21, 1917. He received his formal education in the public schools of Hancock County and graduated from Beechmont High School at Hawesville in 1936. He served inthe United States Army for about three years during World War II. He was in the Hawaiian Islands, stationed at Scofield Barracks for about two years. Stewart was a member of the American Legion, Moose Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Stewart married Marjorie Holman, daughter of Claude Baptist and Mary Henrietta (Sprinkle) Holman at St. Paul's Rectory in Tell City, IN by Father Shanshan (Roman Catholic Priest) on March 25, 1951. Stewart and Marjorie lived on a farm near Newtonville, in the Huff Township in spencer county, IN. They were both employed by the General Electric Company in Tell City, IN. Stewart and Marjorie adopted a boy, David Stewart Lamar in 1962.
