Facts and Events
Stephen Wardwell Goodrich, one of 34,000 Union soldiers held at Andersonville, a notorious Confederate prison in Georgia. He survived the typhus, scurvy and dysentery that flourished when the men were packed like cattle into a 22-acre clearing without shelter or sanitation. Goodrich, the grandson of a Revolutionary War veteran, witnessed General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. He became a respected physician and died at age 90 in 1937.
