    SPENCER FREDERICK HESS was born July 7, 1912 on Lowville, New York, the son of the late Glenn Hess and Mary (Beals) Hess. He was raised and received his education in the Lowville community.

    He was a Veteran of World War II, having served for twenty-four years in the United States Air Force, until he received his discharge in 1962, at the rank of Master Sergeant.

    Spencer was united in marriage to Elizabeth 'Mae" Rose on July 6, 1942 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They celebrated their 68th Wedding Anniversary this past July. Following their marriage, they resided in several communities including Spokane, Washington; Pendleton, Oregon and Tampa, Florida until returning to Spokane, Washington. In 1952, they moved to their acreage in the Manning community, where they lived for forty-nine years, until 2001 when they moved to the Jennings McCall Retirement Community in the Forest Grove community, where they have resided since.

    Following his discharge, Spencer worked as an equipment operator for the State of Oregon Highway Department in Manning, for twelve years, until 1974 when he retired. He also operated a tree farm on their acreage, having harvesting timber for many years.

    He was a member of the Oregon State Tree Farm Association.

    Among his special interests he enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, stamp collecting and working on his tree farm.

    Spencer was also preceded in death by his daughter, Rosemary Ann Hess on November 1, 1999; his stepson, Eugene Earl Hess in July of 2009 and his brother, Lyman Hess.
    Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Mae" Hess, of the family home in Forest Grove, Oregon and his sister, Luella Dreyer, of Millville, New Jersey.

    Also surviving are seven grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, Spencer Hess and several nieces and nephews.
