Sophia Howard was baptised on 20th October 1822 at Willian in Hertfordshire, daughter of a labourer called John Howard and his wife Elizabeth, who were both from Willian. However, at the time of Sophia's birth the family did not actually live in Willian, but at Arlesey, a couple of miles to the north-west. Sophia also later gave her place of birth as Walsworth, to the west of Willian and south of Arlesey. It would appear that the family later returned to Willian.

The 1841 census finds Sophia living in Willian in the household of a clergyman. No occupation is given for her, although it would seem plausible that she may have been a domestic servant.

In 1845, aged 22, Sophia married William Pratt at Willian. They went on to have a daughter called Emma the following year, but she died when only two days old. She was followed by a daughter called Eliza in 1848, then a daughter called Emily in 1849, who also died as a baby.

The 1851 census finds Sophia, William and their surviving daughter Eliza living in Willian. Sophia was working as a plait maker, whilst William was an agricultural labourer.

It would appear that Sophia and William had a son called William in 1853, whose birth was registered in the Hitchin district (which covered Willian) although no baptism has been found for him. They then appear to have moved to the London area, having a son called John born in the St Pancras district in 1855.

They later returned to Willian. Sophia's son John died at the age of three in 1858 and was buried at Willian on 18th June 1858. Sophia herself died a couple of months later, being buried at Willian on 18th September 1858, aged about 36. It is not clear what became of her husband William. Her daughter Eliza went on to be brought up by Sophia's parents in Willian.

Although Sophia's father's name on her marriage certificate is given as Francis, this baptism with the father's name given as John is nevertheless considered to be correct. After Sophia's death her daughter Eliza appears in the 1861 census described as the granddaughter of John and Elizabeth Howard at Willian.
