Sophia Gaylor was born around 1815, daughter of a labourer called William Gaylor and his wife Sarah. Sophia does not appear to have been baptised as a baby, but was baptised on 5th March 1820 at Holwell in Bedfordshire.

On 27th April 1834, Sophia married an agricultural labourer called James Worbey. They married at Holwell, although he was from the Walsworth area in the neighbouring parish of Hitchin. After their marriage they lived for a couple of years in Holwell, having children baptised there in 1834 and 1836. They then moved to Walsworth, where they had another three children between 1839 and 1842.

Sophia died in 1843, when she was said to be 28 years old. She was buried at Hitchin on 28th October 1843. James survived her by over thirty years.

Although this baptism is a few years after the time Sophia's answer in the 1841 census implies that she was born, it is in the parish in which she married, and there is a marked gap between William and Sarah Gaylor's earlier children and this baptism - their previous child's baptism was in 1813. It therefore seems likely that Sophia was not baptised as a baby but was baptised together with her sister Edith a few years later.

The Hertfordshire Burials collection on Findmypast has two versions of this burial register, one on the standard pre-printed pages typical of the time (reproduced as the table above) and the other in a different style. Possibly one is the Bishop's Transcript, but it is not made explicit which is which. There is a slight discrepancy between the two versions for this burial - the non-standard one recording her as "Sophia w of James" and the standard one recording her as "Sophia, Widow of James". As James was still alive, presumably the "Sophia w James" was intended to signify "Sophia wife of James", and the record was misinterpreted when the second copy was made.
