Shubael Edgar Swain was born in New York City to Captain Shubael Swain and his wife Sarah Turner. He was a well known lawyer, being a partner with Benjamin M. Stilwell. They were considered conservative and were highly respected. He married Catherine Nagle, and Irish lass, moved to Jersey City, but commuted to NYC to work until his death,from complications do to surgery for cancer of the tongue. He had two children. Edgar Swain, and Katie Swain. Katie Swain married William B. VanVorst, brother of the mayor of Jersey City, had a baby, contratcted TB and died; later the baby also died. Edgar married a Delilah Shorb, and later married Evangeline Scherrer. She had one son from a previous marriage to Emil Eckhardt, and a daughter, Eva Katherine Swain, with his second wife.
