  2. The 1880 census shows George and Seddie (Powers) Smith (transcribed here) listed as son-in-law and daughter, respectively, of James L Coffin and his wife Eliza. The 1870 census from Wisconsin shows James Coffin married to Hannah, with Henry Powers living in the same household, suggesting she was married to a Mr. Powers previously, offering the possibility that it might be Seddie's mother remarried. In 1869 James Coffin married Hannah Eliza Hicks. According to Find A Grave, this Hannah Hicks was James Coffin's second wife. Seddie's mother, named as "H. Eliza Powers" in Seddie's marriage to George, appears to have returned to live with her parents George and Loretta Hakes, presumably after her first husband died, in the 1860 census, along with her children, including 13 year old Sarah A.. Compare the parents named in the census to the parents of James Coffin's spouse (George and Doshetta Hicks). Searching for George Hakes in the 1850 census leads to the household of George and Lotheta Hakes in Broome Co, NY, and there we seem to find Eliza and her first husband Thomas Powers and their 3 year old daughter Sarah. While the names and ages have been mangled and swapped along the way, it seems to all fit.
