It appears he was named for Winfield Scott [2] who was very popular in Western New York at the time.

To distinguish himself from another Winfield Scott Wilson in Kane County IL he used his middle name and eventually dropped the initial "W".

If the given birth date is correct, his mother Betsey (Hoyt) Wilson died before he was yet a year old.

His father soon re-married to Anteverta (Smith) Wilson who would have been the only mother Scott remembered.

The parentage stated in this burial record is incorrect.

The 1850 census shows this W Scott Wilson living with "Orsemus and A E Willson" at Batavia, Kane IL.

The 1860 census states that the James and Azuba Wilson recorded at Shell Rock, Butler IA (and later buried there) were born in New York and Massachusetts, respectively.

The 1880 census states that Scott Wilson's father was born in Vermont and his mother was born in New York. This is consistent with the origins of Orsamus Wilson and both of his wives; it is inconsistent with the origins of James and Azuba Wilson, late of Shell Rock IA.
