CHENEY, Sarah, w. of Wales, [died] Nov. 9, 1829, in her 88th y. GR3 [Age 87, so born about 1742. GR3=Vernon Grove Cemetery. Note: the age at death gives a birth date that is incompatible, not only with the recorded birth, but the recorded marriage in 1756 (age 14?) See the gravestone below. A death in 1822 with age 87 gives a calculated birth of 1735. The division of her father's estate is presumed to establish that she m. Wales Cheney, but also note that Pierce gives the death date for Wales and not Sarah, even though both found in the same source.]

Sarah Whitney Cheney.
In memory of Mrs. SARAH CHENEY wife of Mr. Wales Cheney who died Novr 9, 1822. [Note: The gravestone is partially buried. The memorial page gives the death date as 9 Nov 1829, which is also the reading reported in the vital records, but a date in 1829 does not work with the age at death, and is contradicted by the probate of Wales, whose 1812 will mentions a wife, but "widow" is crossed out on the citation of heirs, and a son is appointed administrator instead of the widow being accepted as executrix, indicating she predeceased him (i.e., before 1825). It appears from the image that the year of death is 1822, both 2's have the same horizontal line at the bottom, whereas the 9 from the day of the month, has a different pattern to the heaviness of cut, indicating it is a different number and appears to be a 9.]
