Sarah was born to Hammond and Mary Ann Whitney. She had two sisters - Eliza and Matilda. In 1869 she married Thomas Samuel Farnsworth. They had five children - Chumley, Frank, Nellie, Zula,and Maud. They also had three children who did not live. Thomas was a farmer when they lived in Bloomingdale, MI and later when they moved to Benton Harbor, MI. She continued to live in Benton Harbor until her death.
