There is no probate for Jonas Whitcomb so it is not clear what this assumption is based on, but presumably some document giving a married name of Sawyer, for which the wrong given name was added? The guardian files for David Whitcomb's children Sarah and David names as their guardians Peter Sawyer & Sarah Sawyer, for example, though Peter is explicitly given, not Joshua, and this source doesn't even show the marriage to David Whitcomb.]
