Physical Description
A short 29-year-old woman standing only a breath over 5 feet, Sarah was described as having a fresh complexion that was nonetheless pockpitted. Brown hair, hazel eyes and medium features round out a rather run of the mill dress and stay maker.
Conduct Register
As per Sarah's Conduct RegisterS3, she was tried and convicted at the York West Riding courts on January 5, 1832, sentenced to 7 years transportation. She was transported out to Van Dieman's Land aboard the convict ship "Hydery", arriving in Australia on August 11, 1832.
Officials record that she was being transported for stealing from the person, that her gaol report was bad and she had at least one prior conviction. Ship surgeon's report stated she had behaved "good", that she was married with children.
Sarah herself states that her offence was shoplifting, and that she had been convicted before for a similar offence. She tells that her husband Thomas Moss is being transported on the ship England, that they are married with 2 children. One of the children is aboard with her, a son aged 2 and a half years.
Her conduct while a convict appears to have been fairly good by comparative standards; only 2 entries for minor misconduct before being granted her Free Certificate in 1839.
