Sarah Symonds' origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 17th June 1804 when she married Richard Hobbs at Ivinghoe in Buckinghamshire. They went on to have a son called Matthew in 1805 at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire, and a daughter called Martha in 1808 at neighbouring Flamstead. Richard died in 1810, aged 35. Sarah's daughter Martha also seems to have died aged four in 1813. No plausible death or remarriage for Sarah has yet been found. Her son Matthew settled at Ringshall on the borders of Ivinghoe and Little Gaddesden parishes. |
