The last of the constituent members of the West Genesee Seventh-day Baptist Church passed peacefully from her earthly to her heavenly home on May 22, 1888. Sarah A. Champlin was born in Charleston, R. I., in March 1807. She with her husband and two or three little ones were among the first settlers in the western portion of Allegany county. They possessed those sterling qualities so essential to the successful pioneer.
Forty years ago next August her husband died, leaving her with a family of children. The qualities of fortitude and cheerfulness so prominent in her character helped her to endure the struggle and successfully meet the demands upon her in rearing her large family. The exigencies of the nation in the Civil War demanded some of her treasures. Three of her sons went at the call, and died in defense of the Union. Two sons and four daughters survive to mourn, but not as those without hope. She lived a genial consistent Christian life, and leaves a sweet influence with her memory. Funeral services were held at her residence in the village of Portville, May 24th. Sermon from Job 5: 26. G. W. B.
