Sarah Ambler Pyrah was born on 10th August 1847 at Low Moor in the parish of Bradford in Yorkshire, daughter of Isabella Pyrah, formerly Hodgson, and her husband Luke Pyrah, an iron puddler at a forge. Sarah was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Low Moor when she was a couple of months old.

Sarah appears in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with her parents at Worsnop's Square and Worsnop's Buildings in the North Brierley area in the south of the parish of Bradford. Some time between 1861 and 1871 the family left Bradford and moved to Leeds, settling in the Wortley area to the south-west of the town centre, with the family living on Granite Street in 1871, when Sarah was described as a sewing machinist.

On 2nd June 1873, aged 25, Sarah married a carpenter called Luke Walton, who was nearly nine years her senior and originally from Great Hale in Lincolnshire. They continued living on Granite Street after their marriage, appearing at number 13 in the 1881 census, when they daughters called Ann Elizabeth and Isabella and a son called John William living with them. Another daughter, Clara Ellen, followed later in 1881.

In April 1883, Sarah's husband Luke died aged 44. Sarah was pregnant at the time. Later in 1883 her daughter Clara died aged two. Sarah's last child was another daughter, Sarah Emma, born at the start of 1884, but she died as a baby shortly afterwards.

The 1891 census finds Sarah and two of her surviving children still living at 13 Granite Street in Leeds, along with her parents and one of her brothers. Sarah's eldest daughter had gone to live in Lincolnshire with Sarah's sister in law. Sarah was working as a tailor.

In 1901 Sarah with living with her brother and son at 21 Brancepeth Place in Leeds, working as a buttonhole machinist. The 1911 census finds Sarah visiting her daughter Isabella and Isabella's husband and children at Horsforth. Sarah has yet to be traced after 1911.
