Sarah Mattchem's origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 10th September 1749, when she married a wheelwright named Nicholas Roy at Appledram (also known as Apuldram) in Sussex. At the time of their marriage she was said to be living in Sidlesham, whilst Nicholas was from Pagham. Sarah and Nicholas later settled in Pagham, where they had four daughters baptised between 1755 and 1764. The family appears to have lived in the hamlet of Lagness, with Nicholas being described as of Lagness when he took on apprentices. Sarah was buried at Pagham on 7th September 1795. Her burial record appears to describe her as a servant. Nicholas outlived her by about eleven years. References
