Facts and Events
Name Sarah Jay
Gender Female
Marriage 10 Jun 1778 to Oliver Waldron

According to "A genealogical history of the ancestors and descendants of General Robert Bogardus" by Alice Gray Lovejoy, 1927, Oliver Waldron married Sarah Jay, a daughter of Thomas Jay of New York City, on June 10, 1778. They had six children: Thomas, Sarah, Oliver, Jr., Gertrude, Maria Sabina, and Eliza. I have only seen snippet views of the information, thus far, so I don't know if there is more about Sarah in the book than what I've listed here.

According to "The Prominent Families of the United States of America" edited by Arthur Meredyth Burke, originally published in 1908, the children of Peter Jay (1704 - 1782) and his wife Mary Van Cortlandt were: 1. Augustus, 2. James, 3. James, 4. Peter, 5. Frederick, 6. John, 7. Frederick, then 1. Eve, 2. Anna Maricka, and 3. Mary. There is no mention of a Sarah, and the last child listed was born in 1748. One might expect that Sarah would have been born somewhat after this time.

According to Cowan's Auctions [web page found Feb. 2012] (in reference to an item that they sold): ...Consignor acquired the daguerreotypes from a Vermont family whose lineage can be traced directly to the family of American patriot, John Jay, among others. John Jay's sister, Sarah Jay, married Oliver Waldron, and their grandson, James M. Byrne (1816-1899), was the great great grandfather of the individual from which the consignor acquired the images.

Cowan's Auctions do not state on the web page where they determined the connection between Sarah Jay, wife of Oliver Waldron, and John Jay. If Sarah Jay is in fact John Jay's sister, then her father was Peter Jay and her mother was Mary Van Cortlandt.

From Source S1 - The Jay family was a Huguenot family that fled persecution after the revocation of the Treaty of Nantes - fleeing first to England and then the sons on to America (initially Virginia). The father Pierre died in Bristol, England. The family originated in the Castle Montenneau in the Poictou Provence of France. The ancestors of the American Jays settled in La Rochelle, France. Pierre (Peter) Jay was a wealthy merchant of that city. Pierre Jay married Judith Francois and the births of their three sons are registered in the Registre de Baptemes of the Temple of Ville Neuve at Rochelle (folios 133-166-203) - Pierre, b. May 3, 1663; Isaac, b. March 26, 1664; and Augustus, b. March 23 1665.

Augustus Jay (d. 1751) finally settled in New York City. In 1697 he married Anna Maria Bayard, a daughter of Baltazar Bayard and Anna Lockermans.

John Jay (Chief Justice of the US) was a grandson of Augustus Jay and was married to Sarah van Brugh Livingston.

Jay family references than Maria Sabina Bogardus Gray's book state that Augustus, Isaac and Francis were Pierre Jay's and Judith Francois' sons and that Issac drowned sailing to England from France and that Francis died of wounds received in a battle in Ireland (unmarried and childless) . Their son Augustus had only one son, Peter who had one son John Jay (married to Sarah Livingston). Thus far, I have seen no direct evidence of a Thomas Jay connected to this family.
