Sarah Jane Elizabeth Hull was born in 1865 in Bedford, daughter of a washerwoman called Rebecca Hull, formerly Parrott, and her husband Francis Hull, a bricklayer. She appears to have been known by one of her middle names, as Elizabeth. The 1871 census finds her living with her parents and siblings at 9 Browns Court in Bedford. By 1881 she had left home and was working as a domestic servant at the George and Dragon public house on Mill Street in Bedford.
In the early 1880s, Elizabeth moved about twenty miles south of Bedford to Luton, where she was married on 7th February 1885 to a bricklayer called William Charles Marshall, who was from Luton. They went on to have four children together between 1885 and 1892. The 1891 census finds the family living at 57 Cardigan Street in Luton. Elizabeth was working as a straw hat finisher at this time.
Elizabeth's youngest child was born in 1892 in the neighbouring town of Dunstable, but by 1901 the family had returned to Luton, living at 31 Cumberland Street. In 1911 they were just around the corner at 180 Park Street.
Elizabeth died in 1925, aged 59. William survived her by sixteen years.
