Sarah Hornet was born on 23rd June 1803 at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Hornet, formerly Wingrove, and her husband John Hornet, a labourer. When Sarah was only three years old, her father died.

In 1826 Sarah married an agricultural labourer named James Howard at Wheathampstead, although he was originally from Hitchin. They went on to have five children together between 1827 and 1845. THe first two children were born at Wheathampstead, after which the family moved a few miles west to Flamstead some time between 1831 and 1837. Their younger three children were all born at Flamstead. Their youngest child died when she was only two years old.

Sarah and James appear in the 1841 censuses living at Flint Hall in Flamstead with their children. Sarah's mother, Mary, moved from Wheathampstead to Flamstead during the 1840s, presumably to be near her daughter. Mary died at Flamstead in 1848.

The 1851 census finds Sarah and James living in Flamstead village, was Sarah working as a straw plaiter.

Sarah died in 1859, aged about 56. James survived her by about nine years.

    d. Sarah HOWARD, June Quarter 1859, Hemel Hempstead Registration District, Volume 3a, page 195, aged 57 [1801/2]

The censuses suggest that Sarah died between 1851 and 1861 - her husband James appears in 1861 described as a widower. This appears to be the only death of a Sarah Howard between 1851 and 1861 in the Hemel Hempstead registration district, which covered Flamstead, and is approximately the right age.
