James Howard's origins are unclear. He consistently claimed to have been born at Hitchin in Hertfordshire, and he gave ages suggesting he was born some time between 1796 and 1803. No corresponding birth or baptism record has been found, although there was a James Howard baptised at Hitchin in 1808. Whether this is a different person, or the right person being baptised when a few years old, or the right person but showing he later overestimated his age remains to be established.
James's first confirmed sighting is on 28th October 1826, when he married Sarah Hornet at Wheathampstead, a few miles south of Hitchin. They went on to have five children together between 1827 and 1845, although the youngest died when only two years old. Their first two children were born at Wheathampstead. Some time between 1831 and 1837 the family moved a few miles west to Flamstead, where the youngest three children were born. The 1841 census finds James living with Sarah and the children at Flint Hall in Flamstead. He was working as an agricultural labourer. The family was still in Flamstead in the 1851 census, when Sarah was described as a straw plaiter.
Sarah died in 1859, aged about 56. The 1861 census finds James an inmate at the Union Workhouse in St Albans. It is not clear why he was in the workhouse in St Albans, as residents of Flamstead in need of poor relief were meant to go to Hemel Hempstead workhouse - although St Albans was the workhouse for residents of Wheathampstead, where James had previously lived.
James appears to have died in 1868 in Hemel Hempstead, although he was buried in St Albans, on 5th September 1868. He was probably in his sixties when he died.

Baptisms 1808 / Sept[ember] 14 / James / Son of Rich[ar]d & Ann / Howard / Lab[oure]r
This baptism is possible - James consistently gave his birthplace as Hitchin, but the ages he quoted for himself as an adult imply he was born a few years earlier than 1808. It is also perhaps worth noting that James did not call any of his five children either Richard or Ann.
