Sarah S. Potter, daughter of James and Sarah Morrison Hemphill, and wife of Matthew Potter, was born at Deerfield, Oneida county, N. Y., Sept., 19, 1836, and died in Hartsville, N. Y., March 31, 1902.
Sister Potter was converted when about twelve years of age, was baptized by Elder Cochran and united with the Second Alfred church. Some years later, having moved into Hartsville, she united by letter with the Seventh-day Baptist church at that place, of which she was an honored member at the time of her death. She was married to Matthew Potter March 13, 1856, and soon after they moved to the place which was her home the rest of her life.
She has been in poor health for many years, but was able to be about her work and attend church most of the time until the last few weeks. A noble, uncomplaining, Christian woman, a true friend and kind neighbor, always interested in the welfare of the church and community. She possessed an even, well-balanced and hopeful disposition, was firm in principles and true to her convictions.
Besides her husband she leaves three children: Mrs. Lillian O. Howard, of Hornellsville; Mrs. Eva E. Palmiter and Miss Flora L. Potter, both of Hartsville. Mabel, the first-born, died in infancy. There are also living three brothers and one sister: William, James Monroe and Silas Hemphill, and Mrs. Ruth H. Whitford, wife of President W. C. Whitford, of Milton College, Milton, Wis., besides grandchildren and other relatives. I. L. C.
