Sarah Grant was baptised on 24th May 1847 at Sidlesham in Sussex, daughter of Ann Grant, formerly Leggatt. Her baptism describes Ann as a married woman, but does not name Ann's husband as Sarah's father. It appears that Ann's husband, Charles Grant, had gone to sea, and was therefore not Sarah's father.

Sarah appears in the 1851 census living with her mother and grandfather at Sidlesham. In the 1850s the family moved to Portsea, where Sarah's mother Ann married again in 1858, with her second husband being a beer seller called Henry Wyatt. Sarah appears with her mother and stepfather in Portsea in the 1861 census. She has yet to be traced after 1861.
